REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

The completion of a Diploma of Education has profoundly deepened my understanding of my discipline—business—allowing me to approach teaching with greater clarity, confidence, and effectiveness. Before embarking on this professional development journey, my knowledge of business was primarily shaped by my own experience in the field, which, while valuable, lacked the pedagogical strategies necessary to truly engage students and help them understand complex business concepts.

The diploma provided me with a broader perspective on education, equipping me with the tools to not only teach business content but also to cultivate a learning environment where students can critically engage with and apply the material. Through the coursework, I gained a stronger understanding of how different teaching methods—such as active learning, inquiry-based learning, and project-based learning—can be effectively used in a business classroom. For example, I now use case studies more frequently to encourage students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, fostering both critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The program also introduced me to a variety of assessment strategies, including formative and summative assessments, which have helped me evaluate students’ progress more effectively. The knowledge I gained about creating clear, fair rubrics and assessments aligned with learning outcomes has not only improved my students’ academic performance but has also allowed me to provide more constructive feedback that aids in their personal and professional growth.

Moreover, the diploma has given me a deeper understanding of how to connect business concepts to broader social, economic, and ethical issues, which is particularly important in today’s rapidly changing business environment. I’ve learned how to teach topics such as corporate social responsibility, ethics, and sustainability in ways that encourage students to think beyond profits and consider the broader impact of business decisions.

Lastly, the program has inspired me to continue my professional development. It has motivated me to pursue further qualifications, potentially a Master’s in Education, to further refine my teaching skills and enhance my ability to foster the next generation of business leaders.

Overall, the Diploma of Education has transformed my approach to teaching business, helping me to become not only a better educator but also a more thoughtful and reflective professional in the field.
